Thankful Thoughts

November 27th, 2008 · 2 Comments

My father always said not to be too thankful. What he meant by that was, not to be mechanically repetitive when you say that you are grateful or thankful or it would take away from the meaning of it all. Don’t be a motor mouth or sound like a broken record especially when expressing your appreciation.

Sometimes your feelings (and what comes out of your mouth) can be difficult to control, especially with heightened emotions that come with this season’s trimmings. Emotions well up inside you as you see all your family members gathered together, enjoying themselves, at this time.

You can’t help but start to feel grateful for the littlest things. Nothing wrong with that but…

While we may be immensely grateful for another person’s generosity or expression of giving, saying, “thank you, thank you, thank you,” over and over again will likely make your benefactor uncomfortable and maybe even re-think any future giftings.

Some Thoughts

Instead, you might want to send them a letter or note of thanks via snail mail or email.

You do not have to reciprocate with a gift of equal monetary value. This tends to diminish the value of the original gift and may actually offend the person you are thanking.

I, personally, do not recommend, giving a gift to someone just to thank them for the gift that they gave you. This action will diminish the original intention for the true giver and, will obligate the giver to have to go out of their way to then, thank you. It’s a vicious giving circle that you want to avoid.

How about gifting another person or charitable organization as an extension of the gifter’s expression?  You can do this anonymously if you want.

Use non-verbal reciprocation. Have you ever done something for someone or have given someone a gift and they were so appreciative that made them speechless? All the thanks needed was in their eyes or their actions, such as a hug, sincere handshake or doing them a favor in return.

All of us know this form of communication. It is a type of subliminal energy exchange. It comes from deep inside, from your heart, if you will.

Exercise Your Thoughts

Of course, once or twice is okay to say the words, “thank you;” maybe even three times, but if you need to say the words, “thank you,” more than that for the same thing then, you might want to try this exercise out as an alternative:

Make it a ritual, at the end of the day, perhaps before you go to bed at night, think of five things that you were grateful for that day and quietly or silently say, “thank you,” as you imagine the people surrounding the circumstances for each of the things you feel grateful for.

Why FIVE things? To tell you the truth, I don’t know.

I’m passing this ritual down from a friend of mine who somehow figured out that five was the number to use. Since it has worked, for me and others that I passed this on to, why change it?

But really, it doesn’t have to be limited to five things. In fact, if you do this exercise religiously, you will find that there would be more and more things to be grateful for. You’ll find that five will turn to ten in no time and you will not be able to cover them all before you fall off to sleep.

How do you get around this? How about moving the ritual over to the entire day? As soon as you realize that something that you are thankful for has happened, quietly release your appreciation immediately out to the universe.

You will find that more and more, serendipitous events will start happening for you and there will find more and more things that you will feel thankful for. Eventually, you will not BE grateful but BECOME grateful. Following the Law of Attraction, you can just imagine how your life will BECOME transformed once you reach this state.

Exercise your body and mind after Thanksgiving, but for today…gobble, gobble.

Take care everyone and I appreciate you all for being part of my life.

Great insight in this post. Five things to be grateful for seems a perfect number, just like the 5 energies of Chinese Medicine. One “Thank You” for each element!

Law of Attraction is powerful indeed.

:) Interesting, info about the 5 energies. Also, as I understand it, in metaphysical circles, 5 is the number for love. :)
