The brain is a muscle and it is said that the more you exercise a muscle, the stronger it gets. The best mind games appear to be those that get you involved by using as many of your senses as possible.
- On-line as well as off-line gamers utilize their sense of touch and sight as is the case with Sudoku.
- Sound and creativity adds to the popularity of games like World of WarCraft.
- Console games like Wii bring in the physical body in the mix for a great workout of the mind as well as the body.
Sudoku
It is said that the US origin of the popular numerical puzzle appears to have been invented by the American Architect, Howard Garns, in the 1979 and was popularized by Japan since 1986 under the name “Sudoku.”
The word “Sudoku” consist of the Japanese characters for “Su” and “Doku” which combined, means “single number,” respectively.
The rules of the basic Sudoku gameformat are very simple and there is only one valid solution to each puzzle.
You are given a 9 x 9 square matrix; in which numbers are already provided for you in some of the squares. The matrix is further subdivided into nine grids of 3 x 3 squares.
You must place the numbers 1 through 9 in the squares but they cannot repeat themselves in each of the vertical or horizontal rows. Nor, can they repeat themselves within the 3 x 3 grids.
The game helps increase brain power by challenging you with varying levels of difficulty.
There is Black Belt Sudoku (and all the colored belts below it); Sudoku played with colors instead of numbers; and all the variations in between and beyond. The Mensa organization has even endorsed their name on a Sudoku product-line.
World of WarCraft
The original version of WarCraft by Blizzard Entertainment was created about ten years ago. At that time, it was just a real time strategy game in a medieval setting. It was very cool back then.
Its popularity continued when Blizzard Entertainment came out with World of WarCraft, otherwise known as WoW, which evolved into the behemoth in the MMORPG industry that it is now.
Its popularity took off because, aside from being tied to the original story so much, it’s also the game play, which can make or break the game. Story not withstanding, any good game will ultimately win over the hearts of players from their other online games and make them switch over.
In the case of WOW or World of Warcraft there is so many variables to choose from making the gaming experience unique each time, challenging the mind and ultimately increasing brain power.
Wii
Nintendo wanted the game system to be something everyone, from every age group and culture, could enjoy. As a byproduct of creating a word that would be pronounced “we” in any language the people at Nintendo noticed something else about the word Wii.
The two I’s in the word Wii look like two people standing side by side. What better way to try and convince people that a game console is universally acceptable than by not only making the name sound like a gathering of people but also making the word look like people as well.
It was a master stroke of genius and soon the Nintendo people knew they had their name.
Can you imagine; increasing your mind power and getting some really good exercise, while having fun?
It has to be addicting.
