Families often get so wrapped up in their jobs and in school they tend ignore the effects that psychological separation from each other may have on healing their mind and body and, consequently, each other.
At some point in your life, you really need to take a vacation from your job. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy, just a change of scenery, just get away and recharge your personal batteries. Whether it is to some exotic location, a trip to the beach or to visit relatives, getting away from responsibilities provides a sense of relief and may even provide renewed energy for returning to the job.
When on vacation, it is easier to focus your mind completely on your family, provided you leave your work behind when you leave the house. Even those working from home need to spend some quality time with their family away from home. This enables the family to connect as a unit and have a chance to learn a little more about each other without the daily distractions at home.
On a vacation, parents have a chance to learn about the dreams that their children have and learn more about them as individuals. A vacation, especially if spent together, can provide that needed time for exposure to each other. Focusing and learning about what the others members of the family are doing has even deeper, positive, health benefits to one’s piece-of-mind, so to speak.
Some people choose to work through their allotted vacation fearing they could be replaced in their absence, or that the company would fall apart if they were not there every day. While everyone plays an important part of every company, the company should be able to stand alone while the employee is on vacation. If not, the employee should really reconsider the stability of the company and their future there.
Regardless of their position, every job has stresses associated with the job. Taking a vacation allows those stresses to also take a break. Vacations can actually improve a person’s outlook. Consider a vacation as an opportunity to step back and look at life away from work.
A friend of mine had been working for four years continuously, without taking a vacation and was contemplating quitting her job completely. I told her to take a vacation first. To my amazement, she actually listened to me. Even more amazing to me was that her attitude about her job had completely transformed. She couldn’t believe that she had previously contemplated leaving her job over those minor irritations that she had been complaining about previously.
Some companies give mandatory vacations by stipulating a use it or lose it policy and most workers take their paid time off so as not to donate the money back to the company. Unfortunately, some workers still choose to forego their vacation for a variety of reasons. This, generally, results in long term negative effects on healing as the mind and body does not have a chance to regenerate.
Give your mind and body a break. Take a family vacation and get a massage.
