Making the Connection with Dream Interpretation

September 23rd, 2008 · No Comments

Being an innately lazy person, I am always on the lookout for ways to complete a task the easiest and most efficient way possible.  What can be easier than learning how to control your mind in your sleep? So, I set out to answer the question, “How can I utilize my dreams to form connections to my waking world and ultimately re-create my own waking reality?”

Most of us sleep 6 to 8 hours a night anyway. Using this time to exercise your mind, has got to be the easiest mental exercise program you can do.

Scientific Data

With the advent of the EEG (Electroencephlograph machine) that measures brain wave patterns while you are in sleep state, we are provided with tangible proof that dreams do leave an “electrical stamp,” so to speak. It logically follows that this stamp of electrical impulses could affect the physical body to some degree. This EEG machine and the studies that ensued, proved that dreaming was not a mindless activity but one that could be physically recorded and had tangible effects on the waking mind.

The EEG  studies shows us that, at some point in your natural sleep patterns, you go through a stage of dreaming where you experience rapid eye movement called REM. This REM sleep state is a time when the portion of your mind that controls emotions (limbic system) is activated.

Make the Connection

In order to understand how dream interpretation helps connect us to our waking state, there is one thing that social science research has figured out for us. Basically, they found that our brain has an inherent instinct to make sense of the world around us. Here’s an illustration of what I mean:

If  I tell you that a car sped by me and the driver was weaving in and out of traffic, and a few minutes later I drove past a hit-and-run accident scene. More than likely, your mind will naturally make the connection that the speeding car hit the accident victim and even imagine how the accident occurred.

Our mind is constantly making these connections and actually needs to make these connections as a natural process of the brain. So, it follows that this natural function of our brain does not stop in dream state.

But because dreams are directly connected to our emotions and our emotions are an intangible concept; it stands to reason why much of our dreams take on abstract forms. We wake up wondering, “What was that all about?”

The trick is to “correctly” interpret what the symbols are and determine what the connection is to your waking life.  Obviously, this is not as easy a task as it should be due to the abstract nature of most of our dreams.

It may take years of practice, or you may never get the hang of it BUT if you can master this technique, it can bring you the most amazing results.

Gestalt

Gestalt is the term that is used in psychology which describes the concept that the brain naturally needs to formulate a story that will logically make sense of that which your mind sees.

By creating an accurate and logical story from your dream interpretation, you will form a foundation for your thought patterns. With a solid foundation formed, you will also be able to predict what will happen in your waking state.

Nightmare or Dream

Unfortunately, many of us misinterpret their dreams and call it nightmares. The truth is, that all dreams, if interpreted properly, can be a source of education and mental growth.

Come back toward the end of this week or sign up to my newsletter when I will let you in on a personal dream of mine titled The Tornado Dream that illustrates how I turned a nightmare into a dream to enhance a relationship in my life.
