If you’ve ever wanted to learn magic tricks, either to amaze your friends, or earn a little extra money on the side in magic shows, now’s your chance. Levitation is simple and easy to learn, although like all magic tricks, it takes practice. With just a little bit of alteration to your clothing, you can appear to levitate in front of an astonished audience. Levitation can be performed anywhere, anytime, as long as you’re prepared in advance.
This particular levitation trick is referred to as the King Levitation. It may be considered to be a variant of the famous Balducci levitation by some people, but most magicians see it in its own category. To perform the King Levitation, it is important that you be able to control how your audience sees you. You must stand so that onlookers see you only from the back. There should be an object in front of you, like a box, that you can step onto. You must also modify your pants with a slit down the front of one leg, and wear shoes that are easily slipped off. The shoe on the leg you are to be moving should be attached to your pants leg.
You will have to practice slipping your foot out of the shoe without it moving, and pulling your leg up through the slit in the trousers. It helps to misdirect the audience’s attention at this point by waving your arms and keeping up a good “patter.” When you take your leg out of your pants leg, you put your foot on the box in front of you. Then put all of your weight onto that foot, raising the other one into the air. If you maintain the right muscle tension, it will appear from the back that you are levitating with your heels together. The spectators will assume that your foot has remained in your shoe, and will be unable to guess how you have done the trick if you do it smoothly enough.
Be sure not to stay in the air too long, or spectators will overcome their awe and begin to wonder how you’ve done the trick. Instead, rise your other leg so that you’re standing on the object and slide your leg back into your pants leg and shoe. It will appear that you have levitated yourself up onto the box. This trick will take a great deal of practice, but is relatively simple and requires few props, so it can be learned even by an amateur. Make sure that you practice in front of a mirror first, and then in front of a friend, before you perform the trick before an audience.
Learning to levitate can be a lot of fun. You’ll be able to do tricks that no one else around you knows. Unless you choose to explain how it’s done, your audience will be mystified. A levitation trick might just be the first one you learn. After that, there’s a whole world of magic tricks that you can acquire to amaze your friends.
