Possible Problems for Brain Growth of Palying Video Games

May 25th, 2009 · No Comments

Being the most complicated organ, the brain has countless neural networks linking it to different body parts. It administers both voluntary and involuntary muscles to support bodily functions, and it is also responsible for developing different facets of human life.

For nearly all life stages, it was proven that the female brain is 10% smaller compared with male brain. Brain size of a six-year old child is 95% of the size of an adult brain. Though a six-year old child can have as big a brain as a full-grown adult, it does not mean that the child has the same level of thinking as the adult. Brain advancement is at its maximum upon reaching puberty stage.

Most brain cells are to be hard-wired for sports activities if a person engaged in athletics during adolescence. The same goes for music and academics. But video games seem to be the most prevalent activity for adolescents during this stage.

Several researches were already done regarding the relationship of video games and brain development. Minimal relationship and contrasting notions were acquired from early studies in 1980s. These results have helped little during that time but assisted present studies to achieve better outputs.

Only some part of the brain were observed to have significant response to video games based from recent studies by Japanese researchers. Those brain segments are mainly focused on vision and movement. The frontal lobe, largest area of the brain responsible for emotional and intellectual development, was left behind.

Through digital imaging techniques, researchers were able to see brain portions being used in real-time. During the research, two groups were formed, The first is to play video games while the other is to take continuous adding of single digits for some time, known as the Kraepelin test. The first group showed brain activities and usage in parts concerned for vision and movement. The second group exhibited extensive brain usage for both left and right hemisphere, though the only segment needed for mathematical computation is the left hemisphere.

Further studies revealed that number exercises are more stimulating than music. Reading was also found to be effective for frontal lobe improvement.

Brain cells might have poor quality as the person gets older if the frontal lobe will be given minimal usage during its development peak in adolescence stage. Recent observations caused the worry of underperformance in intellectual aspect for the next generation. This is the most dreaded scenario by the researchers.

This study earned relevant and other useful feedbacks from typical gamers and students. For example, the study did not specify the game genre used in research. Tactical and strategy games that require multi-tasking capabilities might require more than vision and movement skills. Some interesting games to study might be halo odst for sale or used street fighter iv. To find out what games are the best for different types of skills you can use video gamer as a reference. Some students were still top performers in school though they are actively involved in video games. Video game effects seem to manifest in emotional aspect for some gamers. Because of this, the study might have gained another useful input for future video games studies – its relationship to emotional development.
