The power of Hypnotism

May 4th, 2010 · No Comments

Thanks to the increased attention brought by the media, the subject of hypnosis is hardly a strange one. The notion of hypnosis is a common one. People that are hypnotized are found to experience an altered state of consciousness during which they are susceptible to suggestions. Reaching this state can be achieved in a number of ways. Sometimes hypnosis can be induced by a hypnotist who then goes on to utter monotonous verbal commands. In other instances, it is possible for individuals to achieve self hypnotism through the control of key body functions like breathing.

Hypnosis is commonly used in medical circles. It is used in treating individuals with behavioral and psychological ailments. For instance, people suffering from back pain as well other forms of pain have been known to be successfully treated with hypnosis. Its use has even been applied during child birth for the relieving of pain . However, much of the use of hypnosis is directed at finding treatment for psychological/behavioral diseases. Some of these conditions are overating, smoking and alcohol dependence and the treatment of individuals who are insomniacs. Illnesses that are linked to possible psychological causes, such as Raynaud’s Syndrome or male impotency can also be addressed with the use of hypnosis.

People who have been hypnotized are found to be less in contact with the outside world. Instead attention is focused more on mental and psychological experiences. The hypnotist is considered to be the handler during such hypnosis sessions. The level of the trance experienced by people vary from person to person. People who experience the deepest levels of trances commonly have no recollection of their actions or events once they have awakened. 20 percent of people who undergo hypnosis belong to this category.

Whilst the results of hypnotized sessions are permitted in some courts by way of introduction, its use as a form of evidence is mostly not allowed. The stated ability of a patient who has been hypnotized to inaccurately merge actual recounts with generated images fueled by his fantasies is one of the reasons . This recount is further tainted because of the tendency of most patients to impose emotional fears and depression on the images they see. Hypnosis results are therefore only used in court sessions in cases where the emotions of an individual need to be proven and not as a source of actual event recall.
